The Bull's Head NOW OPEN after £334,000 refurbishment
The festive season may be over but for residents of Pratt’s Bottom, there is still reason to celebrate. The Bull’s Head in Pratt’s Bottom, the only pub in the village, is to close at the end of service on 5th January for four weeks for a major £334,000 refurbishment by HEINEKEN owned Star Pubs & Bars & Bars1 and new licensee Joe Courtney and his partner, Pratt’s bottom resident Janet Thomas. It will reopen early February in time for Valentine’s Day with 10 new jobs created on the back of the investment.
The plan is to retain the country pub’s traditional character, whilst bringing it into the 21st century. The interior and exterior are being upgraded to give the local community added comfort whilst also broadening the pub’s appeal to families and people from further afield.
Outside, The Bull’s Head will be given a complete facelift, repainted in a deep redcurrant with new lighting and signage. In the large beer garden the south facing decked terrace will be extended and balustrades added providing seating for 60 with festoon lighting adding to the ambience. There will also be a new outdoor bar shack and barbecue area.
Inside, funds are being spent putting enhancing the character of The Bull’s Head. New wood wall panelling is being installed to replicate the original look of the pub, the beams are being stripped, and the wooden floors and fireplaces renovated.
The cosy interior is being given a fresher look, with seating for a further 25 on top of the existing 35. In the dining area there will be farmhouse tables and mix of wooden and upholstered chairs, and in the bar area, new leather backed fixed seating and freestanding stools.
Food will play a greater part at the pub with a new kitchen installed to allow the pub to cater for the increased number of covers being created. Foodwise, there will be a new menu offering traditional pub classics such as fresh fish and chips and a Ploughman’s sharing board as well as a cracking Sunday roast, all done to high standard with produce sourced locally from butchers, farmers and green grocers. Food will be served from 12 mid-week and from 11am at weekends.
The drinks will include craft beer for the first time, as well as draught ales, an extensive wine list, choice of 25 different gins and barista style coffee.
Joe’s plan is for the pub to have live acoustic music on Sundays and Sky Sports in the background in the bar area.
Kent operator, Joe also has The Summerfield pub in Hither Green, a traditional community pub at the heart of its community and runs the Soul & Motown SoTown festival in Beckenham. Joe said: “The Bull’s Head is the only pub in the village. It needs investment to bring it up to date and make it more inviting. “I have always wanted a village pub as I love their community feel. Janet is also passionate about her village pub so residents can rest assured that The Bull’s Head will continue to play a key role in the village. The intention is to make it the best it can be.”
Dugald Macer, Regional Operations Director, Star Pubs & Bars said: “Pubs need to evolve to remain relevant to consumer needs and ensure their long-term sustainability. The investment will put the heart back into The Bull’s Head, and with Joe and his team at the helm will take it to a new level.
“We are delighted that Joe is taking on The Bull’s Head as he knows the area well. He has already turned around a local pub, making it the beating heart of its community, and I feel sure he’ll do the same with The Bull’s Head.”
